We are trapped in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. Nothing against the town- it's a fine little town, but after 4 days of rain, wind, and boredom here, I'm ready to get out.
We have spent a few days here waiting for good weather to do our sail down to Cape May, getting groceries and doing some plumbing troubleshooting. Last night we were hit with an intense storm that blew like heck all night and dumped a ton of rain. In anticipation of this, we rented a mooring for the night, which turned out to be a very good investment. I think we're renting it again tonight just to be on the safe side.
The mooring comes with free showers, which are fantastic. Showers become so, so important when you don't have regular access to any. This morning when my mom and I went in to take a shower, I brought the scissors and chopped off a bunch of her hair. Despite my lack of hair-cutting expertise, it actually looks pretty decent. After that we trudged into town (in the pouring rain, mind you) and purchased some groceries at the supermarket. Also we bought some fresh food at the local farmer's market, which so far has been delicious.
I have been plugging away at school work the past couple of days, and have been making good progress. (I kind of like this homeschooling thing; wake up at 10, eat some food, read, then go to sleep. I could get used to it.)
Hopefully we will be leaving for Cape May tomorrow, if the weather permits. We will be sailing on the open ocean for about 24 hours, unless we stop at one of the anchorages between here and there. Atlantic Highlands is alright, but I am PSYCHED to see new places!
Have fun, Mary! We're with you every blog of the way!
