Yesterday we explored another picturesque southern city: Savannah, Georgia. With it's wide, oak-lined avenues, shady parks, and bustling waterfronts, Savannah was a delightful place to explore. Around ten o'clock we took the bus into town from the island where we were anchored. Shortly after we got into downtown Savannah we stumbled upon a fabulous art show that was set up in one of the city's parks. We walked through some of the exhibits, ooh-ing and ahh-ing at everything in sight.
After that we walked down to River Street, a charming cobblestone street that winds it's way along the Savannah River. It's a delightful tourist trap, with countless fudge shops and tee shirt stores tucked into the quaint old buildings. I resisted the overwhelming urge to go into the Savannah Candy Company, a crowded little store that was emitting the most delicious chocolatey smells you can imagine.
After exploring that part of town, we thought we'd go back and look around the art show again. My directionally challenged mother led us on a long, roundabout tour of the residential sections of the city as she tried in vain to locate the art show. We must have looked like such tourists standing on street corners with our map out, plainly displaced and confused. Oh well, Savannah's less travelled streets were lovely too.
Eventually we made it back to art show, where we greatly enjoyed browsing the tents full of everything from paintings to pottery. We caught a bus back to our boat (an adventure that proved confusing but eventually successful.)
Overall, fabulous day. Savannah is a great city, if you ever get the opportunity to go there, do it. We're motoring down the ICW right now. We are hoping to get to Jekyll Island in the next couple days, it's supposed to be absolutely beautiful. The weather has been magnificent. Although I sort of miss the snow of Vermont, there's something to be said for 70 degree weather in November. It has been sunny for days, with light winds and low humidity. Score for us.
I am afraid that we may possibly be entering another internet-less area for a while. When I get a signal again, I shall update!
