Laundry & Manhattan

Monday we stayed at Hyde Park, New York. My grandparents live only two hours from there so they drove over and we visited for the day, which was wonderful. We overindulged at a restaurant then went and toured the house of FDR. I am personally not a huge fan of history, but it was really cool. The house was positively amazing and I learned quite a bit about his life and presidency. I have decided that I would like to live there. After that, we went across town and toured the other Roosevelt house, called Val Kill. It wasn't so extravagant, but it was very neat to see.
Last night was spent at Croton, New York. It was rather uneventful, except for the fact that we got to do a load of laundry this morning. This is highly exciting, let me tell you. Laundry will get done once a week tops, so it's a huge treat, even though we had to trudge two miles along a busy downtown to get it done. I never fathomed the lengths I would go to to obtain a clean pair of jeans.
As I write, we are motoring down the last part of the Hudson to NEW YORK CITY! I am so so so so so so SO excited. We will be moored at the 79th Street Boat Basin, which is only thirty bucks a night. (This is a phenomenally good deal for moorings in NYC.)
Our plan is to stay there for a few days and explore New York. I am particularly excited about art museums and people watching in Central Park. My dad of course can't do without a stop at the South Street Seaport. My mom wants so show me the expensive shops on 5th Avenue. I'll be sure to upload pictures of our adventures there!
This is a picture of the Roosevelt house. See why I want to live there?

  1. Mary I'm so excited! I feel like i'm going on a journey too. I can't wait for a picture of the statue of liberty. Have you investigated going to Lee Stocking Island? It is the Carribean research center and maybe you could get a tour. I was there in 1988 with a geology class on Carbonate Deposition. Cool.

  2. Hi Mary, This is Jim, I am a friend of your Dad's from Point Bay. You also met my daughter Amy along time ago when I was working in the yard on my boat.
First off I want to let you know how great a job you are doing on your blog. Your a fantastic writer and I really enjoy and look forward to reading your adventures along the way.
I wanted to contact you to let you know of a couple of places you and your parents may want to visit while in NYC. I used to live in Lagrange NY right near Hyde Park where you were I'm glad you got to see FDR and Val Kill they are amazing places. Vanderbilts mansion is there too and just as spectacular.
I'm glad your going to spend sometime in NYC, it's an amazing place, my daughter fell in love with it the first time I took her and it's her dream to live there one day. We go there several times a year and she always makes sure she gets to go along.
Since you mentioned in your blog that you were excited to visit some art museums while there I thought I would let you know about and exhibition of my grandfather, Charles Burchfield that is going on at the Whitney museum now.You can check it out online at www.whitney.org It's a really nice show, plus the Whitney is a great museum too. And if you like my grandfathers art, while you are shopping on 5th avenue you could take your Dad over to D.C. Moore Galleries and have your Dad buy you one of his paintings. They are located right across the street from Trump Towers at 724 5th Ave.
Also try and visit FAO Schwarz toy store while on 5th ave. too. I don't know if you ever watch the movie "Big" with Tom Hanks but that is the toy store where they dance on the big piano on the floor and they still have it upstairs in the store and you can get on it and play it. Also make sure your Dad buys you some jewelery at Tiffanys just down the street. (if you let him read this he will tell you not to listen to anything I have to say...haha)
Well I have probably bored you to sleep several times by now. Please keep up the great work on this blog, Amy and I really enjoy it. Say hi to your Mom and Dad for me. Have fun and be safe. Jim

  3. Mary,
Just a quick hello to give the url for the photos of your departure, as I realized I never did that. You can see them here:

I guess you'll have to copy/paste that, as I can't make it a link via comment.

We are loving your blog! Have a grand time in the big city, and then tell us all about it!

    All the best,
    Buzz & Co.
